A Kamal Gatte Ki Mala is made with the auspicious number of 108+1 bead. The +1 bead is called the Sumeru and it is not supposed to be crossed while chanting mantra. You can use your Mala to wear on your body for protection, blessings, good fortune, health & well being, and for spiritual evolution. Many people wear the Guru bead at the top of the Mala behind the neck to represent the Divine or the Guru as the highest state of Awareness. As well, you can use the Mala as it is traditionally used for meditation and Japa (chanting mantra repetitively).

When using your Mala for Japa purposes, we hold the Mala with our right hand only, and we can use our thumb, ring finger and middle finger to move from one bead to the next as though we are ‘guiding’ the beads towards us.

A lotus seed or lotus nut is the seed of a plant in the genus Nelumbo, particularly the species Nelumbo nucifera. The lotus is an aquatic perennial plant that grows in tropical to subtropical climate. It is native to tropical Asia and Australia and is commonly cultivated in water gardens for show purposes also though primarily it is cultivated for its edible stems.

Lotus Seed Mala

Lotus flower is called “Kamal” in India. The plant is also called as Indian lotus, sacred lotus or simply lotus. Lotus is considered a sacred plant and is revered by Hindus as the some deities like Lord Vishnu, Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Ganga are portrayed standing or sitting on lotus flowers. Lotus also has a religious significance in Chinese, Buddhist and many other Asian cultures as well.

Lotus seeds promote spiritual and material wealth. Just like the Lotus which blooms beautifully in muddy waters, the Lotus seed symbolizes growth and the ability to rise above all obstacles.

The Lotus is associated with Goddess Lakshmi who is also referred as Kamalvaasini. It is believed that Lord Brahma emerged from the Lotus that arose from the navel of Lord Vishnu.

This Mala is used specifically for Lakshmi Japa & can be placed at the altar as it is said to bring auspiciousness. The mala is made in thread with knots between each bead and Sumeru bead with tassel.

Sumeru

A “Mala” would always have an extra bead whose total number is usually 108. The 109th bead is called “Sumeru”. The “Sumeru” acts as a static point marking the beginning & end of the “Mala”. One should always start the “Japa” with the bead next to “Sumeru”. The “Sumeru” helps in performing disciplined “Japa” as it ensures where exactly to start & how many times “Mantra” has to be chanted. The “Sumeru” is never to crossed over & every time the “Japa” reaches to “Sumeru”, the “Mala” has to be altered to start the “Japa” again.

Japa

Chanting of specific “Mantra” in large no. is called “Japa”. While doing “Japa”, mala should be held in the right hand between the thumb & the ring finger right below the eyes & should not go below the navel. The thumb & the ring finger should be used to rotate the bead signifying the completion of one “Mantra”. The “Sumeru” acts as the static point marking the beginning & the end of the “Mala” signifying the number of times “Mantra” has been chanted. After performing the “Japa”, the “Mala” should be touched with eyes to give it due respect & should be kept in a special bag in the pooja room. “Mala” used for wearing purpose should not be used for “Japa”.

Seven Chakra

Lotus seeds are radiant with the spiritual power of the sun, and they multiply the effects of one’s spiritual practices one million times. Lotus seeds increase one’s devotion, peace of mind, and inner beauty, and attract tremendous cosmic radiance. All of the chakras in the subtle body will bloom like radiant lotus flowers if the lotus seed mala is worn while performing puja, mantra japa, or meditation. Wearing or using a lotus seed mala attracts the spiritual energy of the sun, and makes the face and eyes glow brightly with divine energy. If one lotus seed mala is worn around the neck, and another is held in the hand during mantra japa, Divine Mother in the form of the kundalini energy touches all the chakras, cleansing them and making them bloom like radiant lotus blossoms.
