History of Avur Pasupatheeswarar Temple

The Legend of Adiseshan and Vayu:
Once, Adiseshan (the divine serpent) and Vayu Bhagavan (the Wind God) were locked in a dispute over who possessed greater strength. Adiseshan coiled his thousand heads around Mount Kailash, holding it firmly. Vayu Bhagavan, in his furious form, unleashed a powerful storm, causing the mountain to tremble. The celestial beings (Devas) grew fearful and prayed to Lord Shiva. Responding to their pleas, Adiseshan slightly loosened his grip. Seizing this opportunity, Vayu carried away two mountain peaks. It is believed that one of these peaks landed in Avur, and the other in Thirunallur, thereby sanctifying both regions.

Here, the Presiding Deity, Pasupatheeswarar, manifests as a Swayambhu Lingam (self-manifested idol). This temple is notably home to five Bhairavas, who are uniquely depicted in a standing posture, facing Lord Shiva. This distinctive feature leads to the temple being revered as a Pancha Bhairavar Sthalam (Abode of Five Bhairavas). Among the 276 Shiva temples celebrated in the Thevaram hymns, this is the 21st temple situated on the southern bank of the Cauvery River.

Kamadhenu’s Worship:
Legend further states that Sage Vasishta once cursed Kamadhenu, the divine wish-granting cow. To seek liberation from this curse, Kamadhenu came to Avur, installed a Shivalingam, and performed Abhishekam (ritualistic bathing) with her milk. Lord Shiva, pleased with her devotion, blessed her and relieved her of the curse. Because of this worship by the divine cow (‘Pasu’), Lord Shiva here is known as Pasupatheeswarar. A sculpture depicting Kamadhenu showering milk can still be seen on the temple’s flagstaff (Kodimaram).

Temple Architecture of Avur Pasupatheeswarar Temple

The Avur Pasupatheeswarar Temple is a "Maada Kovil" (a temple built on an elevated platform), constructed by King Kochengat Chola, one of the 63 Nayanmars.

  • The temple features a majestic 5-tiered Rajagopuram (main entrance tower) facing east.
  • Upon entering, visitors encounter the Kodimaram (flagstaff), Balipitham (sacrificial altar), and the Nandi Mandapam.
  • The sanctum sanctorum (Garbagriham) is situated on an elevated platform.
  • Through the Maha Mandapam (main hall) and Ardha Mandapam (ante-chamber), one reaches the Garbagriham where Pasupatheeswarar, as a Swayambhu Lingam, blesses devotees facing east.

Goddess Shrines (Amman Sannadhis)

Within the Maha Mandapam, there are two shrines dedicated to goddesses, both facing south:

  • Mangalambikai: Her prime idol was discovered and installed from the temple tank.
  • Pankajavalli: A deity celebrated in the Thevaram hymns composed by Thirugnanasambandar.

Special Shrines

  • Pancha Bhairavar Shrine: Four Bhairavas face west, and one faces north. Worshipping them with ghee lamps on Ashtami (the 8th day of the lunar fortnight) is believed to bring:
    • Relief from Pitru Dosha (ancestral curses)
    • Removal of negative energies
    • Prevention of accidents and obstacles
    • Attainment of family peace, among other benefits.
  • Murugan Shrine: Lord Murugan, known as ‘Villendhiya Velan’ (wielding a bow), is enshrined with Valli and Deivanai, facing east in the western prakaram (courtyard).
  • Navagraha Shrine: A shrine dedicated to the nine planetary deities.
  • Sapta Matha Sculptures: Sculptures depicting the seven divine mothers.

Sacred Tree and Water Bodies

  • Sthala Viruksham (Sacred Tree): Arasu Tree (Peepal Tree)
  • Theerthams (Sacred Water Bodies): Brahma Theertham, Kamadhenu Theertham (Thenu Theertham), Chandra Theertham, Agni Theertham, and Poigai Aru (River).
    • According to legends, bathing in the Brahma Theertham is believed to cure skin ailments.

Worship and Benefits

  • Relief from Pitru Dosha: It is believed that ancestral curses are removed, leading to family prosperity and progress.
  • Pancha Bhairavar Sthalam: This is a rare and unique place where five Bhairavas are present together, all facing Lord Shiva.
  • Thevaram Paadal Petra Sthalam: Thirugnanasambandar has composed a Thevaram hymn praising this temple. Each verse concludes with the phrase "Aavur Pasupatheeswaram Paadu Naave" (Oh tongue, sing of Avur Pasupatheeswaram).
  • Marriage Obstacles: Devotees worship here for the removal of impediments to marriage.
  • Academic Excellence: Students pray here for success in their studies.
  • Fulfillment of Vows: Performing Abhishekam and offering clothes (Vastram) are done for the fulfillment of vows.
  • Annadanam: The practice of offering food to devotees is observed.

Avur held significant importance during the Chola period. Temple inscriptions refer to "Avur Koottrathu Pasupatheeswaramudaiyar" (Lord Pasupatheeswarar of Avur Kootram). Furthermore, Avur is the birthplace of Sangam-era poets like Avur Kizhar and Avur Moolankizhar. Perunthalai Sathanar, the esteemed author of the epic Manimekalai, was also born in Avur.
